— Origin Story —

The story of a kid who never stopped.

December 19, 1981Fe del Valle Hospital — Manzanillo, Granma, Cuba

Born into a world with no shortcuts.

Media Luna, Granma. A small town where you either accepted the ceiling or found a way through it. I was reading and writing at four — before kindergarten. By third grade I was doing fourth-grade work, but in communist Cuba you don't skip grades. So the school found me something else to do with that energy.

01 / 07

1990 — Age 9Joven Club de Computación — Granma, Cuba

My grandfather Alberto took me there for the first time.

Fidel had introduced computers to the masses through the Joven Clubs — community computer centers that stayed open until 10 PM. My grandfather walked me through that door and I never looked back. The first game I ever played was Digger — a pixelated figure digging tunnels through the earth, collecting diamonds, avoiding monsters. I didn't know it then, but I was learning systems thinking. Every tunnel had consequences. Every move was architecture.

02 / 07

1990–1996Joven Club — Granma then Habana

When we moved to Havana, I found another Joven Club the next week.

No internet. No YouTube. No Stack Overflow. Just the machine, the manual, and time. By 8th grade I was programming in Pascal. By high school, C. The Joven Club stayed open until 10 PM and I was there until closing — not as a student, but as a volunteer teaching adults how to use the OS, then Windows, then Office. I was 15 years old teaching grown men and women how to use a computer. For free. Because I couldn't stop.

03 / 07

1995 — Age 14El Comodoro Club — Habana, Cuba

Then I heard the music.

La Matinée — a Sunday afternoon party at El Comodoro, the first club I ever went to in Cuba. While everyone danced, I watched the DJ. I couldn't take my eyes off him. The technical precision. The control. The crowd reacting to every decision he made. I was hooked before I understood what I was watching. A year later when I got my first computer at 16, Virtual DJ was one of the first things I installed.

04 / 07

1998–2003Instituto Superior José Antonio Echeverría — Habana

Computer Engineering. High Honors.

ISPJAE — one of Cuba's most technically demanding universities. Five years. Graduated High Honors in 2003. And within months of getting that degree, I was gone.

05 / 07

May 2003 — Age 21Cuba → Mexico → Queens, New York

Left everything. Took nothing but the degree and the drive.

Twenty-one years old. Through Mexico. No connections in the United States. No English beyond what I'd taught myself. I moved in with my dad in Queens and walked into New Horizons for a boot camp: a room of 20+ students, every one of them American, every one of them speaking English. I was the only one who spoke Spanish. Eighteen months later I finished third in the class. I wasn't trying to prove anything to them. I was proving something to myself.

06 / 07

2004–2009Queens → Miami — Finding the footing

Graveyard shifts. DELL technician. Teacher again. Then Citrix.

Affinity Dedicated Web Hosting — 3 AM tickets, data center graveyard shift, hands in servers. Then DELL technician. Then back to teaching — Fast Train in Miami, teaching IT certifications to adults, same thing I'd done for free in Cuba but now it was my job. Then one day Citrix called. Sr. Systems Engineer. First six-figure salary in America. I remember thinking: I left Cuba at 21 with nothing, and now this. Not luck. Trajectory.

How I Think

Security Philosophy

Security is architecture, not policy

Most organizations bolt security on after the fact. I treat it as structural — it belongs in the design, not the documentation.

Zero Trust is a worldview, not a product

Never trust, always verify — at every layer, without exception. I've implemented it across financial institutions, healthcare orgs, and SaaS platforms.

Compliance is a floor, not a ceiling

NIST, CMMC, HIPAA, GLBA — I've lived in all of them. But frameworks tell you the minimum. Attackers don't read the checklist.

OT/IT convergence demands different thinking

Manufacturing environments have risk most practitioners ignore. Downtime in those environments isn't a business issue — it's a safety issue.

Leadership Philosophy

I've never waited for permission

Not to learn. Not to teach. Not to leave. Not to build. That started at age 9 in a Joven Club in Cuba and it hasn't changed.

Servant leadership is the only kind that scales

My job is to remove obstacles for my team, then get out of the way. The best signal a team is performing? They solve problems before I hear about them.

Teaching is embedded in how I lead

I was teaching adults computers at 15 for free. I taught certs professionally in Miami. Every team I've led has grown — not just delivered.

Operational discipline is a competitive advantage

Most IT orgs are reactive. I build systems — monitoring, runbooks, change management — that prevent fires from starting. Invisible IT isn't underperforming. It just works.
